Choosing the right musicians for a band
Ready to start Your Own group? There are plenty of musicians out there willing to pursue a career in music with you, but how do you choose the right musician? Different musicians contribute different sounds of a band based on their skills technical innovations and diversity of music. For example, Metallica is not healthy as they are without James Hetfield, or Dream Theater would sound not the same without the talents of Mike Portnoy drums.
Here are some tips on how to narrow your list of members of the band potential.
-
Determine their level of commitment. You want a musician to the level of commitment similar to the rest of the band. Is the band a full time thing or are you jamming only during celebrations for fun on weekends? Musicians with a high level of commitment is always good but if they can discourage the rest group is lazy and only wants to play sometimes minimal. Calculate how many times the group should meet to play and then find musicians who can commit to this schedule.
-
Technical skills and diversity. While technical skills are important, there should be a good balance between diversification of the music as well. Anyone can take a guitar and shred like Yngwie Malmsteen with a reasonable amount of practice picking the same notes on several occasions, but not everyone can play with the senses, like Jimmi Hendrix.
-
The musician right should enjoy playing style music as the rest of the group.
-
Compatibility with personality. Playing in a group is fun and you should be able to agree with all members of your group offstage. In general, we could get along with people in your group age more strongly, so that may be something to consider when choosing musicians.
-
The mind open to other musical genres. Although this may not apply to each band, it might be worth considering if your group ever decides to change his musical direction.
-
Group playing experience. In general, the more the band game experience the better. There is a difference between self-taught musicians that practice home by the musicians themselves and learn through playing in other groups. Musicians who have no experience of the band could have wrong with the following tracks as they are used to playing at home to Lightbox CD's. In addition, if your group still plans on running live concerts, musicians may be inexperienced cargo point.
-
Enthusiasm. Does the player take the band seriously enough to prioritize? Does the musician to contribute to the band musically? The enthusiasm is displayed if they contribute many ideas in the songs and take some extra practice at home too. If the musician is always late for practice, do not contribute and only play what told them to play, then chances are he / she is not very involved in the band.

There's little doubt that this two-volume concert and documentary package will appeal to die-hard Metallica lovers--given its more than three-hour length (two and a half for the concert segment alone), the band's predominantly white male fan base (repeatedly addressed as "man" by singer-guitarist James Hetfield) will be--in fact already are--ecstatic. But one wonders, especially given the erratic history of rock-cum-orchestra experiments, whether S&M will win Metallica any new aficionados. The fact is that the presence of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by composer Michael Kamen, adds texture but not much else of significance to the Metallica sound. The band is so loud that it tends to overwhelm even a 100-plus member orchestra; what's more, Metallica's crunching, fist-pumping, riff-laden metal music lends itself less to genuine orchestral adornment than to superfluous bombast. And while the sound quality is excellent, it's still basically just a filmed concert, with little in the way of additional visual interest. Still, there are some cool moments, and all involved are clearly having a great time. There are also two new Metallica songs, "No Leaf Clover" and "Minus Human." (Note: also available is an edited version, sold at a slightly lower price, which corresponds to the popular PBS broadcast. The longer version carries an explicit content advisory label, due to much casual profanity, especially in the "making of" documentary.) --Sam Graham DID YOU HEAR THE ONE ABOUT THE ROCK BAND THAT WANTED TO PLAY WITH A SYMPHONY? METALLICA, NEVER RESTING, NEVER CEASING TO INNOVATE OR AMAZE, RETURNS WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY DOCUMENT OF THEIR CONCERT WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY. |

Metallica - Some Kind of Monster List Price: $14.99 Sale Price: $3.74 Used From: $1.79 Average Rating: ![]() |

With voyeuristic intensity, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster explores the intricate connections that are created, nurtured, and challenged between members of a long-lasting band. That this intimate odyssey of group therapy and self-discovery involves Metallica--the most successful heavy metal group of all time--is just one reason this film is so uniquely fascinating. Having proven their documentary skills with Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost (which included Metallica in its soundtrack), filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky spent two years with Metallica as the band survived the defection of long-time bassist Jason Newsted, struggled to record St. Anger, and recruited $40,000-per-month "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle to counsel members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett as they confronted alcoholism, creative obstacles, and themselves in an effort to determine the viability of Metallica's future. With sincere hope, honest discussion, and the hiring of new bassist Robert Trujillo, Metallica battle their personal and professional demons, showing the vulnerable side of a business that thrives on raging testosterone. The effort pays off for everyone involved, especially the fans: Like the ultimate backstage pass, Some Kind of Monster is a healing journey into the hard-beating heart of rock & roll. --Jeff Shannon No Track ListingSystem Requirements:The film that Spin calls "as worthy of a place in the rock-doc pantheon as Don t Look Back and Gimme Shelter" is an intensely intimate look at one of the biggest hard rock bands of all time. Some Kind of Monster takes you inside the studio and into the psyches of Metallica as they record their Grammy-winning album St. Anger while battling their way through addiction fatherhood backlash from fans and near-total disintegration during the most turbulent period of their twenty-year history. Jam-packed with bonus features this rock n roll psychodrama is unlike anything you ve ever seen!Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS Rating: NR UPC: 097368863743 Manufacturer No: 886374 |

Metalocalypse - Season 2 List Price: $29.98 Sale Price: $19.95 Used From: $14.96 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
Black metal fans, fear not--the men of Dethklok have returned to make your world a little darker (and funnier) with Season 2 of the animated series Metalocalypse. Though the show is as densely plotted--often to absurd levels--as any Adult Swim program, and riddled with inside references to the metal scene (from which spring many of the guest vocal talents, including members of Metallica, Dimmu Borgir and Arch Enemy), one doesn't have to be a fan of either to enjoy the show. It does help, however, to have an appreciation for dark humor, as the season opener, "Dethecution" illustrates; having survived the near-fatal attack by their nemeses, a military cabal called the Tribunal, Dethklok decides to return to public life by giving a concert that doubles as a mass execution for 200 death-row inmates. Dramatic changes like this--and the mayhem that follows them--are the crux of Metalocalypse's second season, and include guitarist Toki taking lessons from an ancient master to up his value to the band ("Dethlessons"), an ill-advised trip to the Amazon in search of hallucinogenic drugs (a terrific Herzog spoof titled--what else?-- "Dethcarraldo"), drummer Pickles' disastrous reunion with his former flash metal band (the two-part "Snakes 'N Barrels), and the cliffhanger conclusion, which finds Dethklok releasing its latest album at the same time the former fans-turned-terrorists known as the Revengencers launch an all-out assault on them ("Dethrelease"). Burning questions in regard to the origins of the buffoonish Dr. Rockso and Nathan's love life are also addressed, and fans get a deeper glimpse into the band's lunatic lives, most notably in the hilarious "Dethwedding," which introduces Pickles' deadbeat brother Seth. Again, enjoyment of the show is entirely dependent on one's tolerance for absurd and often crude humor, but its lampooning of rock excess remains as sharply focused as ever. As with the first season set, the extras are strewn about the two-disc set in the form of Easter Eggs, though they're not particularly hard to find on the main and episode selection menus. Once located, fans will find everything from extended scenes and videos for "Mermaider" and "Bloodrocuted" to clips of the band reading excerpts from Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" or simply listing other metal outfits they like. Each are clever in their own way, and do much to underscore Metalocalypse's party-till-you-explode aesthetic. --Paul Gaita Studio: Turner Hm Entertainm Release Date: 12/02/2008 Rating: Nr |
