Wanted! Success Stories Main Street
The sweet taste of success! Blair Candy Company, a family of third generation took their company from Altoona in Fargo - in cyberspace.
Candy Blair came to our attention by Dave Dadurka, staff writer for distribution channels, a publication of the American Wholesale Marketer's Association.
Dave knew that Tony Blair Candy illustrated exactly what we were looking for: a family-owned to brick and mortar company that has added an Internet component to grow their business.
Blair Candy is a wholesaler and distributor of candy, tobacco and paper products in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Patrick Dandrea, who finally sought help from his son Ron and Terry, it was established in 1940.
The impetus for the online company Macharola came from Pam, who was in charge of public relations and has done much to purchase the company. She offered to work with the design firm to oversee the production site, and now serves as webmaster of the site, in addition to the other hats she wears.
For over half a century, the company was thriving. Why, then, if they were interested in developing the Internet? What did they want the Internet to do for them and their business.
"It was a double thing," said Blair VP Terry Dandrea. We wanted our name out there. We had an information section on the site that explains our business, our scope of delivery, and we wanted to get this information as many people as possible. "
"At the same time, we wanted to order. We started small, with few items that we thought was unique candies of yesteryear, the candy you do not see in most stores. "
Although their first site does the company on the map, so to speak, he has failed to bring in new business they had hoped. Soon they saw that they have to take initiatives on their own to make the site successful. Even if they were new to the world of electronic commerce, they found solutions where web professionals was inadequate.
"The design firm has set up and running, and it was OK," said Terry.
"They told us they put us up where people find us because one of our big questions was, hey, we're a small company, and when you get on the Internet, we are still a small business because there are so many competitors on the market. "
"But we get zero hits, no sales at all. We took it upon ourselves to go to Yahoo and get publicity ourselves, and we had pay. We had to pay to play online, but we started receiving orders.
Once the orders started coming in, they decided to take their site to another level. In addition to extending the capabilities of their e-commerce system, they wanted to make the site easier to edit and update. A new company was hired to analyze and redefine the site. They had a number of ideas on how they could rebuild and bring the technology up-to-date.
"We wanted to get to the next step for us control our articles a bit better, make changes more often. We have that now, but we went through weeks and weeks of problems there. "
Despite their early setbacks, Blair Candy has found its place on the Internet and their e-commerce goals, increase sales and increase awareness of the society have been met.
But the appointment of Blair Candy with the Internet does not work end only with their website. They found that the Web is an excellent research tool. They frequently use to find new (or cheaper) suppliers to keep an eye on their competitors, and discover what items are in demand, ensuring that their inventory will reflect elements of their customers want to buy.
The Internet does not take the place of the sellers and the actual delivery trucks, though. Blair has many customers, outlets Retail in particular, in the Altoona area, and they choose to serve these customers directly, face to face. What the Internet has done for them is to attract new individual customers, "Shoppers Home", looking for hard to find novelty candies and paper products that are the specialty of Mr. Blair.
Pam explains: "Many people move out of this area, and they know they can get local specialty items from us, as Mallocups and the original Peanut Butter Meltaways, which are placed in Altoona. He opened our doors to so many. We owe our name to the scale National. We are on the East Coast, but many of our orders came from the West Coast. "
Pat Dandrea, the company president, accept them. "We have developed a client base in California, Oregon, North Dakota. It has expanded our activities beyond (geographically) something we could have done without it. "
I interviewed over 50 successful long established company, Main Street, such as candy Blair, asking many of the same questions I asked Terry. I sought the common denominator, two or three reasons, all of them referred to a power line otherwise successful traditional business.
In addition to having their stories published on our website, where it receives Traffic from compatible web searches every day, they were used as an example of "best practices" in the book "Doing It Right" achieve your potential company that we published in 2003 and whose content we have recently made available on our website without charge.
Now, we begin with another batch of business owners who want to tell their story. We ask some of the same issues, I asked Terry to help us tell the history of societies, Main Street strategies for continued success in the 21st century.
The new profiles will be posted on our website and some of them will be selected as part of the content in one of two books we have ongoing.
Based on our experience doing these interviews, we have significantly simplified the process for the next round. There is a page titled "Submit Profile" on every page of our website. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more I think you confined to the information you need there.

From the swaggering frustration in the first song ("I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping," Mick Jagger sings in the hyper "Rocks Off"), the Stones speed through familiar neighborhoods of country, blues, and R&B on Exile. They never even bother to stop when they've crashed into something. They don't leap into new worlds so much as master the old ones, turning Slim Harpo's blues obscurity "Hip Shake" into a harp-and-piano steamroller and setting spines a-cracking in "Ventilator Blues." Both "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards's "Happy" have become hits, but the 1972 album is most notable for its overall murky adrenaline. --Steve Knopper Before Keith Richards's bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess--Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol--but that's just part of this album's hazy game. --Rickey Wright Exile on Main St. [Deluxe Edition] (2PC, Enhanced) ROLLING STONES Label: Umvd Labels Release Date: 5/18/2010 Disc 1 1 Rocks Off - 4:32 2 Rip This Joint - 2:23 3 Shake Your Hips - 2:59 4 Casino Boogie - 3:34 5 Tumbling Dice - 3:47 6 Sweet Virginia - 4:26 7 Torn and Frayed - 4:17 8 Sweet Black Angel - 2:57 9 Loving Cup - 4:25 10 Happy - 3:04 11 Turd on the Run - 2:38 12 Ventilator Blues - 3:24 13 I Just Want to See His Face - 2:53 14 Let It Loose - 5:18 15 All Down the Line - 3:50 16 Stop Breaking Down - 4:34 17 Shine a Light - 4:16 18 Soul Survivor - 3:48 Disc 2 1 Pass the Wine (Sophia Loren) [Alternate Take] - 4:54 2 Plundered My Soul - 3:59 3 I'm Not Signifying - 3:54 4 Following the River - 4:51 5 Dancing in the Light - 4:21 6 So Divine (Aladdin Story) [Alternate Take] - 4:32 7 Loving Cup [Alternate Take] - 5:25 8 Soul Survivor [Alternate Take] - 3:59 9 Good Time Women [Alternate Take] - 3:21 10 Title 5 - 1:47 |
