Movie Review - "Last Chance Harvey" Quality Gets Acting, but suffers from writer / director 's effort

Last Chance Harvey - 2 star - Average
Is it possible for your two leads to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress Golden Globe Awards, and yet your magnum opus is average at best?
Yes it is, especially if your son is Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, and writer / director of the film is Joel Hopkins. Then you have the makings of a "Last Chance Harvey." This film is much too dark and depressing to be a romantic comedy, it feeds more negative than positive energy.
Last Chance Harvey is not a bad choice. Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is a person who was concerned not comfortable around and just lovely. Most of his time is devoted to lament his condition in life. His wife dumped years ago. His dream job was to be a jazz pianist, but he just a jingle writer working for an advertising agency in Manhattan, who is about to throw it away young talent.
His wife remarried, and her daughter is closer to his stepfather as he. Harvey made a career of being absent by choice. Now, he traveled to London for the wedding of his daughter and receives a very cold reception from his ex and all those counts. It becomes a disaster when rehearsal dinner, can not wait to leave London, and informs his daughter that he will not attend the wedding reception.
Unfortunately for Harvey, he gets caught in a traffic jam misses his flight and was promptly informed that he was fired.
He finds solace in a bar after forcing himself on Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), a survey taker who never married and is now concerned that it will become an old maid. Long story short, these two losers find enough in another to tolerate being together.
In Soon after, Kate convinces Harvey to attend the wedding reception of his daughter and he agrees as long as it accompanies. Long story even shorter, they have almost a good time the receipt and agree to meet at noon the next day. This scenario sounds familiar, think "An Affair to Remember".
Harvey, of course, does not go because the elevator is broke to his hotel, he went up the stairs, is a crisis of arrhythmias and is off hospital. Kate looks wise and is crushed when Harvey does not show, as a teen-aged daughter Sappy. It never occurs to her that Harvey could have been run over by a Mack truck on his way to meet her, she imagines the worst, because it follows the miserable results come as in quicksand. It works in the end? What do you think? That is why you see the film, as it is.
This is not the quality that makes Last Chance Harvey, a film medium, it is the writer / director Joel Hopkins. Believe me when I say that Hopkins does his best to this movie a winner artistic and financial. Ultimately, it is not.
Last Chance Harvey reminds me of a movie named Jack Nicholson in "About Schmidt "is just terrible.
As a cinephile and film critic, I'm related images, human dynamics and psychology of living and existing. Harvey and Kate that the characters are written as people exist, moan and complain rather than choosing to live a better life. It is good thing they have found the other, because misery does love company.
Harvey is just not as a sympathetic character, and Kate is not much better.
Last Chance Harvey made 14 million at the box office, barely a rip-roaring success. Other than two nominations Golden Globe for Hoffman and Thompson (not won), donor allocation to avoid this film like the plague.
Hopkins inexperience as a writer or a director, and has courted failure by trying to become both the writer and director. I am sure his ego does not give him much choice in the matter. For all the wannabe who thinks they can make great films as screenwriter and director, there are at least 10 others fail miserably.
Its use for Joel Hopkins is to learn how to become a good storyteller. Hopkins should consider "Waking Ned Devine" by Kirk Jones and "Secondhand Lions" by Tim McCanles. McCanles and Jones are on top of my list of great writer / directors, and not much experience when their talent is obvious.
Waking Ned Devine was the first effort Kirk Jones "as writer / director, and was Secondhand Lions Tim McCanles second effort "as writer / director. If I had millions to invest, I would fund both Jones and McCanles, leave the track and watch the magic happen on the big screen.
In all likelihood, Hopkins has more talent than we've seen, it just needs continue to improve and perfect his art. And here's a postscript to start, never name a character in a film depressing Harvey Shine, because Harvey did anything but bad weather, and reminds us about this throughout the entire movie.

Larry Cohen scratched out some of the most memorably offbeat exploitation films of the 1970s, including two of the most energetic blaxploitation action classics: Black Caesar and its sequel, Hell Up in Harlem, which made a star of Fred Williamson. In 1996 they reunited for this tribute to the good old days and producer-star Williamson brought along a few of his fellow 1970s blaxplo icons: Jim Brown (Slaughter), Pam Grier (Foxy Brown), Richard Roundtree (Shaft), and Ron O'Neal (Superfly). They play old friends and former members of a neighborhood gang in economically depressed Gary, Indiana, who reunite when a new generation of gangbangers using their old street name, the Rebels, turns the city into a war zone. It's great fun to see the old faces back on the screen--Williamson is still buff and tough, and Brown and Grier have become more charismatic with age--but they're let down by a slack script and lazy direction despite an almost nonstop barrage of gunfights and back-alley brawls. Even with revved-up 1990s firepower, the film never really captures the explosive energy of the films that made their reputations. You're better off seeing the originals. Paul Winfield and Isabel Sanford also star, and Cohen casts cult faves Charles Napier, Wings Hauser, and Robert Forster in supporting roles. --Sean Axmaker |

They play old friends and former members of a neighborhood gang in economically depressed Gary, Indiana, who reunite when a new generation of gangbangers using their old street name, the Rebels, turns the city into a war zone. It's great fun to see the old faces back on the screen--Williamson is still buff and tough, and Brown and Grier have become more charismatic with age--but they're let down by a slack script and lazy direction despite an almost nonstop barrage of gunfights and back-alley brawls. Even with revved-up 1990s firepower, the film never really captures the explosive energy of the films that made their reputations. You're better off seeing the originals.
