National Middle Distance USA Indoor High School Track Records - What it takes to be the best

After receiving my 2009 All-Time Indoor List files and compiled the best performance by Ed Gordon, I asked myself: "What are the best U.S. files remotely through high school inside? "

This question arose in my mine because I had just finished an article on the 2009 Simplot Games, the first high school to meet inside the West, and one of gatherings of top talent in the nation's preparedness.

Gordon's 221-page book is an incredible collection of every record of the inner world, with a long list of best times around the world to record performances. Such publication is a goldmine of information for a person like me who happens to be a member of the track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA).

Having been a fan track follower and participant in over 58 years, reading records also back memories for me. Even the school list is too long to publish all the files in the compilation of Gordon, so I focused about events of half-back, because that is my field of knowledge and expertise.

Two factors must be taken into account in the sharing impressive performance of these high school with you. First, there is very little competition within over competitions outdoors, so there is much less likely to break records.

Secondly, the inner tracks may vary from time to old 11-track round up ash as I used to run, and a modern, 8 laps, 200-Meter Track up to bank boards or artificial surface composition. That said, here athletes whose stars shine again:

The first is Alan Webb, who competed for South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia. Webb holds Interior records in three events-1000-Meter in 2:23.68, the 1,500 meters in 3:43.27 and the mile in 3:59.86, all in 2001. The 1500 balance was started recording Mile. Executing a sub-4 minute mile as a rider of preparation is not easy, and do so the interior is even more difficult.

Before he graduated from high school, Webb would also broke the record of national preparedness in the outdoor mile (3:53.43) and outdoors in 1500 Meter (3:38.26). Ultimately, he would beat the American record in the outdoor mile (3:46.91) in 2007.

Another legend running, Gerry Lindgren, Rogers High School in Spokane, Wash., holds two records-Meter 3000 in 8:06.3 and the 2 Mile in 8:40.0, both placed in the same event in 1964, 45 years ago and has never beaten the best of the best since. After graduating from high school In 1964, Lindgren gain notice in the world by beating two seasoned Russian runners to win the 10,000-Meter Event in the US-USSR Track Meet in Los Angeles.

While Running for the Washington State University, Lindgren would win 11 NCAA championships and remains to this day only 1 of 2 riders forever beat Steve Prefontaine in the NCAA title, winning the 1969 NCAA Cross Country individual title when Prefontaine finished 3rd.

Lindgren would end up sharing the 6-mile world record (27:11.6) with Billy Mills, the 1964 Olympic 10,000 Meter Champion and gold medal winner.

Dave Merrick Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox, IL all the 3-mile record by running 13:37.0 in 1971. Brad Hudson, South Eugene (OR) High School set the 5,000-Meter record with 14:29.28 in 1971. To really appreciate indoor record of Merrick, you just know he ran back-to-back-to-back miles in 4:32 pace, which is a lot of laps on a small track.

Two other cases are worth noting. Michael Granville Bell Gardens (CA) High School ran 1:50.55 in the 800 meters in 1995, and Greg Gibson of Connell (WA) High School ran 2:10.1 in the 1,000 yards in 1972.

Among the records of these girls, no name shines more than Mary Decker of Orange (CA) High School. Decker still holds 800 Meter (2:01.8) and 880-yard (2:02.4) records set in the same event in 1974. Both marks were indoor world records at the time, She also set the 1000 meters world record (2:26.7) this year as a prep runner.

Decker (now Mary Decker Slaney) was very popular, very talented and a fierce competitor on the track. Decker will continue to put 36 national records and 17 world records. It is the only U.S. rider, man or woman, to hold all the American records from 800 to 10,000 meters at a time.

Decker still holds the American records from 800 meters 1500 meters, 1 mile, 2,000 meters and 3,000 meters.

Another school indoor record-holder who will become even more famous was Lynn Jennings of Bromfield High School Harvard, MA. Jennings set the 1500 meter mark by running 4:18.9 in 1978.

Jennings would go to win 3 World Championships Cross-Country, 9 U.S. National Cross-Country Championships, and became the bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Its Olympic time (31:19.89) in the 10,000 meters set a U.S. record. His American road-race record for the 10,000 (31:06) still stands.

Melody Fairchild of Boulder (CO) High School holds two records at the National Indoor school: the 3000 meters and 9:17.7 in the 2 Mile in 9:55.92, both set in the same event in 1992. It would become a repeat Foot Locker National High School Cross Country Champion and still the course record holder. Fairchild was the first girl from high school to break 10 minutes for 2 miles.

Diana Richburg of Lansingburgh High School in Troy, New York 1000 Yard-2: 26.3. Sarah Bowman of Fauquier High School in Warrenton, VA at 1000 Meter-2: 43.40. Debbie Heald Neff High School Miranda, CA in the Mile-4: 38.5. Cathy Schiro of Dover (NH) High School at 3 Mile-16: 20.9. Brianna Jackucewicz Howell North High School in Farmingdale, New Jersey at 5000 Meter-16: 43.02.

The story of a 20-year old African American man having a hard time growing up and facing life on the mean streets of L.A. A worthy companion piece to 1991's Boyz N the Hood, John Singleton's Baby Boy expresses compassionate but unforgiving criticism of young, African American black men who lead reckless, irresponsible lives while blithely blaming racism for their chronic disadvantage. That's already enough to make this a provocative and emotionally challenging film, but Singleton injects his drama with such passionate vitality that it never seems inflammatory; instead, in presenting this portrait of a confused and conflicted 20-year-old black man named Jody (Tyrese Gibson), Singleton is both affectionate and accusatory, lending Baby Boy an edgy, timeless wisdom that other, less courageous films could never hope to offer. Unemployed and living with his 36-year-old mother (A.J. Johnson), Jody has fathered children from two young mothers and seems destined for an early grave. He never knew his father, but his mother's new boyfriend Melvin (played to perfection by Ving Rhames) is an ex-con with streetwise maturity that Jody, in time, will come to recognize and respect. A musical animated version of the life of Pocahontas, a Native American girl who legend says saved the life of explorer and colonist John Smith. Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual.
